As of June 2009 U.S. insurance companies had millions invested in fast-food. According to a study by Harvard Medical School 11 large companies offering life, disability or health insurance owned approximately $1.9 billion in stock in the 5 largest fast-food companies - including McDonald's and Burger King. The researchers suggested that insurance companies like Massachusetts Mutual, Prudential Financial and Sun Life should sell the stock or use their influence as major stockholders to pressure fast-food companies to sell foods whose frequent consumption isn't directly linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes - thus putting assurance in their insurance.
As of 2010 a system to issue speeding tickets from space was being tested in London. "SpeedSpike", developed by an American company, consists of 2 cameras on the ground and 1 mounted on a satellite in orbit. The system figures a car's average speed between 2 points, records an image of the car's license plate and reports the driver if he or she is driving faster than the law allows. This technology not only works over a several-block range and from hundreds of miles up, it also works on cloudy days and at night. For speeders this system puts the "tell" in satellite.
As of April 15, 2010 the last sardine plant in the U.S. shut down. For 135 years there were sardine canneries in Maine's coastal villages. During that time more than 400 canneries came and went. Sardines are not a specific species of fish. They are any of dozens of small, oily, cold-water fish that are part of the herring family. After blanching, the sardines were still packed by hand and then cooked in their cans. Because of cuts in herring fishing quotas, decreased consumer demand and increased competition from China and Thailand, the last 130 U.S. sardine workers were "canned".
Finally, as of September 1, 2010 Archie Comics will have a new character - Kevin Keller, an openly gay student at Riverdale High. Archie Comics debuted in 1941; and since then there have been more than 1.5 billion sold, including spin-offs like "Sabrina The Teenage Witch" and "Josie And The Pussycats". Because Archie Comics are published in a dozen languages and distributed all over the world, the company's Co-CEO said, "The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive". In other words, for fictionalized Riverdale High it's a sign of the times.
